I would recommend this walk to anyone !

Girona, a mere 100km from bustling Barcelona, is Catalonia’s best kept secret!

The city and the  province which shares its name has become a focal point for gastronomy– both for the richness and tradition of Catalan cuisine and for the cutting edge, avant-garde chefs emerging on the scene either originating from or inspired by this region. Girona’s envious location nestled between the mountains and the Mediterranean sea makes it a strategic destination for active tourism such as cycling or trekking. In the culinary world, the region’s diversity results in a varied and fascinating blend of mountain and sea inspired cuisine of the highest quality.

Girona’s enchanting medieval city will be the launching point of your culinary adventure. Touring Catalonia’s Mountain to Sea Gastrononmic adventure will provide you with a delicious crash- course on Catalan cuisine and unique opportunity to connect with the land, the local people and the traditions that make this region ( and it’s food!) so special.

Spoiled for your choice of Michelin star or Michelin star-worthy restaurants and the perfect combination of history and charm– Girona will steal your heart.

Catalan Cuisine 101

Local Market Experience

For your first up and close encounter with Catalan gastronomy, we will take you to the heart and inspiration of Catalan cuisine. You will rub shoulders with the locals as they go through their weekly shopping routine. You will have an extra special, personalized experience at the market because you will be introduced to each vendor, who will be eager to share with you their fresh produce: artisanal cheese paired with marmalades, salt and vinegar cured cod, or bacalla,  roasted pepper escalivada, olive oil varieties and traditionally cured pork sausages– llonganisa or fuet–complete with an explanation on the purchasing and preparation process.

Jamon, Jamon!

Your Catalan culinary education will continue as we head to a delicatessen whose speciality is high quality, cured Iberian ham or,  in Spanish, jamon. Through three jamon tastings and accompanied with a chilled glass of cava, you will quickly become a true Jamon Expert. Here you will learn the characteristics of the different varieties of jamon and learn to sniff out quality jamon–that used for the mid-day sandwich to the  amon served at weddings. We will end our session by teaching you the art of cutting the perfect slice of jamon.

Highlights:

  • Morning Local Market Tour
  • Jamon Tasting and Carving Session
  • Traditional Catalan Lunch
  • Free Afternoon or OPTIONAL Salvador Dalí Museum visit in Figueres

Cities/Towns Visited:

  • Girona city
  • Figueres (optional)

Day 2: Family-owned Vineyard Tour & Seaside Lunch & Visit

Get ready for a day full of gastronomic activities! We will start with brunch at the vineyards and continue on to a stroll through the quaint, whitewashed coastal town, complete with a perfect sea-side lunch. The vineyard we will visit is family-owned and fiercely dedicated to the recovery of the vines in the Cap de Creus Natural Park. The first harvest took place in 2000 and was completed entirely by hand– with the help of friends and neighbors. Next it is on to pay a visit to Salvador Dali’s beloved seaside town, Cadaques.

A visit to the coast would not be complete without a seafood paella– served of course, with a hand-picked regional wine.

For those of you interested in the peculiar and ostentatious life of Salvador Dali, there is an optional visit to his private beach residence and museum, Port Lligat, where he spent the last years of his life.

Highlights:

  • Vineyards Tour & Wine Tasting
  • Seafood Paella Lunch
  • Explore the seaside town Cadaques
