Rhinegau & Middle-Rhine valley hike trip.

Many legends rank around the Rhine, uncountable castles and fortresses, quaint winegrower villages and fascinating scenic view points. Enjoy two of the most remarkable Rhine Walking routes in this hike trip. Nestled in idyllic vineyards of Rhinegau and impressive Middle-Rhine valley, which has been enlisted as UNESCO heritage. This impressive hike trip ends as stylish as it started – at Deutsches Eck in Koblenz.


Mountain hiking

Wine-grower paths, solitary walking paths and old bridle paths ensure varied walking. Basic fitness and sure footedness is required for uphill/downhill sections on the mountain ridges of Middle-Rhine valley. Walking times of up to 6 hrs. And distances of up to 24 km are to be reckoned.

Walking with a dog

On this particular walking tour you have the option of bringing your ‘four-legged friend’. When booking, simply let us know the breed and size of your dog. Possible additional costs are payable locally on site.


1st Day: Individual journey to Mainz

The rustic old town around Dome St. Martin sets the style of the coming tour. Most interesting the Gutenberg-Museum, the elector’s palace, a Roman amphitheatre and medieval old town with half timbered houses.

2nd Day: Mainz - Schlangenbad

By boat to the start of today’s walking tour. You walk past the castles Biebrich/Freudenberg and through the Rhinegau vineyards you walk to the thermal spa Schlangenbad im Taunus.

3rd Day: Schlangenbad – Oestrich-Winkel

Visit impressive Monastery Eberbach, often used as backdrop for history films. Founded in the early 12th century it had a zenith in the 18th century. Idyllic wine-grower community Oestrich-Winkel on Rhine is your overnight place for today.

4th/1st Day: Oestrich-Winkel - Rüdesheim

Walk along the ”Rieslingwegs” (sparkling wine path) to the well-known vineyard at Schloss Vollrads. Light deciduous forests line your way to Kloster Marienthal (a monastery), which is a place of pilgrimage.  You will have great views into the distance whilst walking to the famous St. Hildegard abbey through the Blaubachtal valley and the well-cultivated vineyards. The old wine-growing town, Rüdesheim, where winegrowing has been carried out since the Roman times will welcome you with traditional wine inns and historical half-timbered houses.

8-Days tour and 5-Days tour: Individual journey to Rüdesheim. / 5th/2nd Day: Rüdesheim - Lorch

Climb the high rides of Middle-Rhine valley (by cable car) and enjoy the beautiful views on the estuary of Nahe. Wine-grower communities Assmannshausen and Lorch disply many half-timbered houses.

6th/3rd Day: Lorch – Dörscheid/Kaub

You will walk along diverse paths and along the mountain ranges with fantastic panoramic views across the Rhine valley until you get to the historical shipping port, Kaub or to Dörscheid. Today’s stage is a real experience what with the Nollig castle ruin, castle Gutenfels and what is no doubt the day’s highlight – the imposing toll castle Pfalzgrafenstein.

7th/4th Day: Dörscheid/Kaub – St. Goarshausen/surroundings

Climb on legendary Loreley-rock and look down on river Rhine. Three fortresses in St. Goarshausen are expecting you.

8th/5th Day: St. Goarshausen/surroundings – Kamp Bornhofen / 5-Days tour: Individual departure or extra days

Walk on idyllic paths to wine-grower communities on the river Rhine. Fortress Liebenstein and fortress Sterrenberg are two „hostile brothers“ from the 12th/13th century.

9th/6th Day: Kamp Bornhofen – Braubach

Fortress Liebeneck, Dinkelholder mills and a completely conserved Marksburg fortress are your faithful companions on the stage to Braubach, a wine-grower town with fortification wall and many half-timbered houses.

10th/7th Day: Braubach – Koblenz

Cross a tributary river to Rhine at Lahnstein and ascent to Westerwald. One final highlight is Ruppertsklamm – a dramatic gorge and then the grand final: the Deutsches Eck (German Corner) in Koblenz where river Moselle joins the waters of Rhine.

11th/8th Day: Individual departure or extra days

Departure after breakfast.

  • By train to Mainz or Rüdesheim and a few walking minutes/short taxi ride to the hotel.
  • Car parking: Limited free parking at the starting hotels. No reservation possible. Public parking in Rüdesheim and Mainz for approx. EUR 10 per.
  • Return to starting point by train, duration 1 hr for all routes.
  • Return to starting point by ship (www.k-d.com), travel times: Goarshausen – Rüdesheim about 3 hours, Koblenz – Rüdesheim about 6 hours, Koblenz – Mainz on request (1x changeover).
